Śrī Rāma-Raksha Stotra (श्रीरामरक्षास्तोत्र)
Śrī Rāma-raksha Stotra (श्रीरामरक्षास्तोत्र)
Śrī Rāma Rakṣā Stotra (Sanskrit: श्रीरामरक्षास्तोत्रम्) is one of the most powerful divine hymns (Sanskrit Stotra) in praise of Lord Śrī Rāma, recited as a prayer, and a request for the complete protection of Lord Rāma.
Vedic Sage Budha Kauśika was commanded in his dream by Lord Shiva to compose this hymn, and he composed the stotra, as soon as he awoke in the morning, thus this hymn has a divine origin.
'Rāma Rakṣā' literally means 'Protection of Lord Śrī Rāma (to us)'.
Śrī Rāma Rakṣā Stotra is also called Rāma-Kavācha, a shield of Protection by Lord Śrī Rāma, It is Śrī Rāma's armour called Vajrapanjar (वज्रपंजरनामेदं).
Whoever sincerely recites with all faith in Śrī Rāma, keeping its true meaning in heart, he not only gets the protection from Śrī Rāma, but He will also get all the necessary prosperity and powers, he will prosper in this world, and achieves liberation in the end.
Thus, this hymn is a complete prayer to Śrī Rāma in itself and recited with all faith and love by millions of devout Hindus and Śrī Rāma-Bhaktas every morning and on especial occasions such as Rāma Navamī, Navarātri etc.
In Chaitra-Navarātri and Āśvīn Navarātri, one should recite Rāma Rakṣā stotra at least 12 times each morning in Brahma-muhūrta (just before sun-rise) for all 9 days, keeping the true meaning of stotra in heart while reciting it.
1. Sings supreme glory of Śrī Rāma Nāma:
As like Śrī Rāma is the most attractive and also the ultimate refuge, similarly Śrī Rāma Nāma is the most beautiful and the best among all mantras for protection. Śrī Rāma Rakṣā stotra is also the song of supreme glory of Śrī Rāma Nāma.
The most beautiful Nāma which even Lord Shiva enjoys for chanting:
राम रामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे ।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥३८॥
rāma rāmēti rāmēti ramē rāmē manōramē ।
sahasranāma tattulyaṁ rāmanāma varānanē ॥38॥
Lord Shiva tells:
O' Fair-faced lady (Pārvatī)! My mind enjoys saying the beautiful Nāma - Rāma, Rāma, Rāma like this. Uttering once the name of Rāma is equal to the uttering of any other name of God, a thousand times ॥38॥
The most powerful among all mantras:
पातालभूतलव्योमचारिणश्छद्मचारिणः ।
न द्रष्टुमपि शक्तास्ते रक्षितं रामनामभिः ॥ ११॥
pātālabhūtalavyōmacāriṇaśchadmacāriṇaḥ ।
na draṣṭumapi śaktāstē rakṣitaṁ rāmanāmabhiḥ ॥ 11॥
They who travel in the hell, earth and heaven and who travel secretly (changing forms), would not be able to see (the one who reads) the one who is protected by the names of Śrī Rāma or Rāma Rakṣā Stotra. ॥11॥
जगजैत्रैकमंत्रेण रामनाम्नाभिरक्षितम् ।
यः कंठे धारयेत्तस्य करस्थाः सर्वसिद्धयः ॥ १३॥
jagajaitraikamaṁtrēṇa rāmanāmnābhirakṣitam ।
yaḥ kaṁṭhē dhārayēttasya karasthāḥ sarvasiddhayaḥ ॥ 13॥
In all three worlds, one who wears the hymn of the name of Rāma as a protection round his neck, would get all the powers and Siddhis (accomplishments) on his hand. ॥13॥
2. A treasure of sweet names of Śrī Rāma :
Śrī Rāma Rakṣā stotra contains many beautiful names of Śrī Rāma, so it is very much pleasing and nectarine to heart and mind for recitation.
Some beautiful names of Śrī Rāma coming in this hymn are:
Śrī Rāma, Rāmabhadrā (Śrī Rāma, the most virtuous), Rāmachandra (Śrī Rāma whose countenance is like full moon), Rāghava, Raghunandan (the darling of Raghus), Raghunātha (the lord of Raghus), Daśarathātmajaḥ (the son of Daśaratha), Kausaleyā (the son of Kauśalyā), Vishwamitrapriy (favourite to Viśvāmitra), Saumitri-vatsal (affectionate to Lakshman), Sītāpati (the consort of Sītā), Jamadagnyajit (the conqueror of the son of Jamdagni), Bharatvandit (saluted by Bharat), Vidyanidhi (the ocean of wisdom), Khardhvansi (the destroyer of demon Khara), Jambvadashray (in whom Jambvan takes refuge), Sugrivesh (the lord of Sugrīva), Hanumatprabhu (the god of Hanuman Ji), Raghuttama (the best of Raghus), Dāsarathī (the son of Dāsarathī), Kākutstha (the scion of Raghus), Bharatagraj (the elder of Bharat) Puruṣa (Supreme Purusha of Vedas), Pūrṇa (the complete, the absolute one), Jānakīvallabha (the dearest [Vallabha] of Janaki), Purāṇa-Purushottam (the Puruṣottama renowned in scriptures), etc.
Each name of Śrī Rāma is so beautiful in Śrī Rāma Rakṣā Stotra, which makes this hymn a treasure of the sweet names of Śrī Rāma, so everyone should recite it daily to drink the pure nectar in form of sweet names of dear lord.
3. Suggest 'Sarvabhāvēna śaraṇāgati’: Surrender to Śrī Rāma with your whole being (heart) (all Bhāvas)
Śrī Rāma Rakṣā Stotra gives a very beautiful and unique verse dedicated for surrendering into lotus feet of Bhagavan Śrī Rāma. 'Sarvabhāvēna śaraṇāgati ' into supreme Purusha Śrī Rāma is the conclusion of Rāmāyaṇa as well as Gītā, Śrī Rāma Rakṣā Stotra also sings for the Sarvbhaven Śaraṇāgati (taking Śaraṇāgati of lord with whole heart).
mātā rāmō matpitā rāmacaṁdraḥ ।
svāmī rāmō matsakhā rāmacaṁdraḥ ।
sarvasvaṁ mē rāmacaṁdrō dayāluḥ ।
nānyaṁ jānē naiva jānē na jānē ॥ 30॥
My mother is Śrī Rāma, my father is Bhagavan Śrī Rāmachandra, my Swami (lord, husband, master) is Śrī Rāma, my dearest friend is Śrī Rāmachandra, my everything is merciful Śrī Rāmachandra. I know none else, I know of no other like him, I really don't! ॥30॥
So here one pledges and takes śaraṇāgati (refuge) of Bhagavan Śrī Rāma with whole heart. It is for experiencing Śrī Rāma all the time. if one is not able to fix his/her heart in any one of the relations with Śrī Rāma, so s/he should take Śaraṇāgati (refuge) of lord with Sarva-Bhāvas - this is the complete meaning of Gita 18.62.
Conclusion of Gītā:
Take refuge in Him (Parabrahman Śrī Rāma who is inside the heart) alone with your whole being, O scion of the Bharata dynasty. Through His grace you will attain the supreme Peace and the eternal Abode. ।।Gita 18.62।।
Here the meaning of 'Sarvabhāvena' is very mysterious, It means one should take refuge of supreme lord with whole heart in such a way that all the love directed towards our beloved ones should merge at a single place in lord himself. This is also told by Lord himself in Śrī Rāmacharita-mānasa:-
The ties of affection that bind a man to his mother, father, brother, son, wife, body, wealth, house, friends and relations are like so many threads which a pious soul gathers up and twists into a string wherewith he binds his soul to My feet. [Śrī Rāmacharitmanas 5.48.2-3]
A saint of this description abides in My heart even as mammon resides in the heart of a covetous man.
4. Gives Śaraṇāgati Mantra :
Here is the Mantra for taking Śaraṇāgati of the lotus feet of Bhagavan Śrī Rāmachandra:
श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ मनसा स्मरामि ।
श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ वचसा गृणामि ।
श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ शिरसा नमामि ।
श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥२९॥
śrīrāmacandracaraṇau manasā smarāmi ।
śrīrāmacandracaraṇau vacasā gṛṇāmi ।
śrīrāmacandracaraṇau śirasā namāmi ।
śrīrāmacandracaraṇau śaraṇaṁ prapadyē ॥29॥
I remember the feet of Śrī Rāmachandra in my mind. I praise the feet of Śrī Rāmachandra by my speech. I make salutation into the lotus feet of Śrī Rāmachandra by bowing down my head. I take refuge on the feet of Śrī Rāmachandra by bowing myself down. ॥29॥

By him the hordes of demons who move at night have been destroyed, I salute that Rāma, To him is said my prayer! Beyond him there is nothing to be worshipped, (and thus) I am servant of that Śrī Rāma alone!! My mind is totally absorbed in Śrī Rāma. O Rāma, please lift me up (from lower to higher self) ॥37॥

avyāhatājñaḥ sarvatra labhatē jayamaṁgalam ॥ 14॥

Gets all sorts of wealth (Sarva-Sampada) and becomes free from all the dangers and obstacles:-
आपदामपहर्तारं दातारं सर्वसंपदाम् ।

āruhya kavitāśākhāṁ vaṁdē vālmīkikōkilam ॥ 34॥
I salute the great Sage Vālmīki who sings the sweet name of Rāma, sweet letters of Rāma Nāma (in form of Rāmāyaṇa) as sweetly as a cuckoo will sing sitting atop a tree. ॥34॥
āpadāṁ apahartāraṁ dātāraṁ sarvasaṁpadām ।
lōkābhirāmaṁ śrīrāmaṁ bhūyō bhūyō namāmyaham ॥ 35॥
Who is destroyer all the dangers and obstacles, and consecrator of all sorts of wealth, I again and again salute that Śrī Rāma who is delight of all the worlds. ॥35॥
bharjanaṁ bhavabījānāṁ arjanaṁ sukhasampadām ।
tarjanaṁ yamadūtānāṁ rāma rāmēti garjanam ॥ 36॥
The road of the name of Rāma destructs of the cause of rebirth (grants liberation), generates happiness and wealth, and a scare to Yama's (lord of death) messengers. ॥36॥
rāmō rājamaṇiḥ sadā vijayatē rāmaṁ ramēśaṁ bhajē ।
rāmēṇābhihatā niśācaracamū rāmāya tasmai namaḥ ।
rāmānnāsti parāyaṇaṁ parataraṁ rāmasya dāsōsmyaham ।
rāmē cittalayaḥ sadā bhavatu mē bhō rāma māmuddhara ॥ 37॥
I worship Śrī Rāma who is jewel (among kings), who always wins, and who is lord of Rāma (Sītā or Lakshmi the goddess of wealth). By him the hordes of demons who move at night have been destroyed, I salute that Rāma, To him is said my prayer! Beyond him there is nothing to be worshipped, (and thus) I am servant of that Śrī Rāma alone!! My mind is totally absorbed in Śrī Rāma. O Rāma, please lift me up (from lower to higher self). ॥37॥
rāma rāmēti rāmēti ramē rāmē manōramē ।
sahasranāma tattulyaṁ rāmanāma varānanē ॥ 38॥
Lord Shiva tells:
O' Fair-faced lady (Parvati)! My mind enjoys saying the beautiful nama - Rāma, Rāma, Rāma like this. Uttering once the name of Rāma is equal to the uttering of any other name of God, a thousand times. ॥38॥
iti śrībudhakauśikaviracitaṁ śrīrāmarakṣāstōtraṁ saṁpūrṇam ॥
॥ Thus ends Hymn (of Lord) Rāma (for) protection and composed by Budha Kauśika ॥
॥ śrīsītārāmacaṁdrārpaṇamastu ॥
Obeisances to Śrī Sītā and Rāmacandra!
