Guru Stotram
अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम् |
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||१||
akhaṇḍa maṇḍalākāram vyāptam yena carācaram
tat padam darśitam yena tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (1)
akhaṇḍa - unfragmented; maṇḍalākāram - one infinite whole; vyāptam - pervades; yena - by which; carācaram - movable & immovable; tat padam - That state; darśitam - has shown; yena - by whom; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - guru, teacher; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that Guru who revealed to me that Truth, which is unfragmented, infinite, timeless divinity, and which pervades the entire universe - movable or unmovable.
अज्ञानतिमिरान्धस्य ज्ञानाञ्जनशलाकया |
चक्षुरुन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||२||
ajñāna timirāndhasya jñānañjana śalākayā
cakṣur unmilitaṃ yena tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (2)
ajñāna - Ignorance; timir - cataract; āndhasya - blinded; jñānañjana - medicinal collyrium; śalākayā - collyrium stick; cakṣur - my eyes; unmilitaṃ - opened; yena - by whom; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that reverential teacher, who opened my eyes, by applying the divine collyrium of self-knowledge in my eyes, which had got blinded by the cataract of ignorance.
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः |
गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||३||
gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇu gurur devo maheśvaraḥ
guruḥ sākśāt parabrahma tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (3)
gurur - Guru; brahmā - Creator; gurur - Guru; viṣṇu - Sustainer; gurur - Guru; devo - the divine; maheśvaraḥ - the Destroyer; guruḥ sākśāt - the Guru is verily; parabrahma - the transcendental divinity (which is the very basis of all the three); tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
Guru himself is the creator, sustainer and the destroyer. He is verily the very transcendental divinity, (the timeless life-principle, which is the very essence of the creator etc.) My reverential salutations to that glorious teacher.
स्थावरं जङ्गमं व्याप्तं यत्किञ्चित्सचराचरम् |
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||४||
sthāvaram jangamam vyāptam yat kiñcit sacarācaram
tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (4)
sthāvaram - animate; jangamam - inanimate; vyāptam - pervades; yat - that which; kiñcit - every vee-bit; sacarācaram; inclusive of everything movable or immovable; tat padaṃ - That state; darśitaṃ - has shown; yena - by whom; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - guru, teacher; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that reverential teacher, who revealed to me that which pervades everything in this world, whether animate-inanimate, or movable-immovable.
चिन्मयं व्यापि यत्सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् |
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||५||
cinmayaṃ vyāptaṃ sarvam trailokyaṃ sacarācaram
tat padaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (5)
cinmayaṃ - The self-effulgent diviity; vyāptaṃ - pervades ; yat - that which; sarvam - everything; trailokyaṃ - the three worlds; sacarācaram - inclisive of everything which is movable or immovable; tat padaṃ - That state; darśitaṃ - has shown; yena - by whom; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - guru, teacher; namaḥ - my salutations.
My salutations to that glorious Guru, who revealed to me that self- effulgent divinity (the pure unconditioned consciousness) which pervades all the three worlds, with all its movable and immovable objects.
सर्वश्रुतिशिरोरत्नविराजितपदाम्बुजः |
वेदान्ताम्बुजसूर्यो यः तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||६||
sarva śruti śiroratna virājita padāmbuja
vedāntāmbuja sūryo yo tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (6)
sarva śruti - Of all Vedas; śiroratna - crown jewel; virājita padāmbuja - abide at his lotus feet; vedāntāmbuja - the lotus of vedanta; sūryo - sun; yo - he who; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that reverential teacher, who is like a sun for the blossoming up of the lotus like mantras of upanishads; and at whose lotus feet lie the beautiful flowers, symbolizing the best of jewels of vedas.
चैतन्यश्शाश्वतश्शान्तः व्योमातीतो निरञ्जनः |
बिन्दुनादकलातीतः तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||७|
caitanyaḥ śāṣvata śānto vyomātīto niranjanaḥ
bindu nāda kalātīto tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (7)
caitanyaḥ - Consciousness; śāṣvata - eternal; śānto - of the very nature of peace; vyomātīto - transcending space (& time); niranjanaḥ - taintless; bindu - the concept of zero; nāda - the primordial sound; kala - parts; atīto - transcending; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that reverential teacher, who is verily the eternal consciousness, which is of the nature of peace. He transcends space (& time), the concept of zero, the primordial sound and all parts.
ज्ञानशक्तिसमारूढः तत्त्वमालाविभूषितः |
भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदाता च तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||८||
jñāna śākti samārūḍha tattva mālā vibhūṣita
bhukti mukti pradātā ca tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (8)
jñāna- knowledge; śākti-power; sama-equal, same; ārūḍha-mounted, ascended, reached; tattva – reality, truth; mālā – garland; vibhūṣita – adorned, decorated; bhukti – worldly prosperity; mukti – liberation; pradā – grant, bestow; ca – and; tasmai – to that; śrī –glorious; gurave – to guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that glorious Gurudev, who is established in Knowledge and Power, who is adorned with the garland-of -Knowledge and who grants both worldly prosperity and spiritual liberation.
अनेकजन्मसम्प्राप्तकर्मबन्धविदाहिने |
आत्मज्ञानप्रदानेन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||९||
aneka janma samprāpta karma bandha vidāhine
ātma jñāna pradānena tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (9)
aneka - Of many; janma - births; samprāpta - accumulated; karma bandha - the bondage of action; vidāhine - burns down; ātma jñāna - The Self-Knowledge; pradānena - by imparting; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Salutations to that reverential teacher who by imparting the SelfKnowledge, has burnt away the very bondage of actions in a whiff, which had even though taken infinite lives to accumulate.
शोषणं भवसिन्धोश्च ज्ञापनं सारसम्पदः |
गुरोः पादोदकं सम्यक् तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||१०|
śoṣanaṃ bhava sindhośca jñāpanam sāra sampadaḥ
guroḥ pādo’dakam samyak tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (10)
śoṣanaṃ - drying up; bhava sindhośca - the endless sea of seeking; jñāpanam - by enlightening me about the; sāra sampadaḥ - the true wealth; guroḥ - of the guru; pādo’dakam - the water left behind after washing the feet; samyak - fully; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
Even by the very sipping of the charanamruta (the water with which the feet of guru are washed), we get blessed by the eternal wealth (of liberating knowledge), and which dries up the endless ocean of seeking & the subsequent sorrows. My Salutations to the lotus-feet of that glorious Gurudev.
न गुरोरधिकं तत्त्वं न गुरोरधिकं तपः |
तत्त्वज्ञानात् परं नास्ति तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||११||
na guror adhikaṃ tattvaṃ na guror adhikaṃ tapaḥ
tattva jñānāt paraṃ nāsti tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (11)
na - There is no; guror - than Guru; adhikaṃ - higher; tattvaṃ - truth; na - there is no; guror - than Guru; adhikaṃ - higher; tapaḥ - penance; tattva jñānāt paraṃ -higher than the knowledge of truth imparted by the guru; nāsti - does not exist; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
There is no higher truth than the Guru, no higher penance than (service to) the Guru, and there is nothing higher than Realisation of the Knowledge of the truth imparted by the Guru. My salutations to such a Gurudev, who is himself that very timeless truth (and who has taken up a form to bless his disciples like us with real knowledge).
मन्नाथः श्रीजगन्नाथः मद्गुरुः श्रीजगद्गुरुः |
मदात्मा सर्वभूतात्मा तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||१२||
mannāthaḥ śrī jagannātha mad guru jagad guruḥ
madātma sarva bhūtātma tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (12)
mannāthaḥ - My Lord; śrī jagannātha - is the Lord of the universe; mad guru - My teacher; jagad guruḥ - is the Teacher of the entire universe; madātma -My Self; sarva bhūtātma - is the Self of all; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
My Lord is the Lord of Universe; My teacher is the teacher of the entire universe; and my Self is the Self of all. My salutations at the lotus-feet of such a Guru, who has revealed such knowledge to me.
गुरुरादिरनादिश्च गुरुः परमदैवतम् |
गुरोः परतरं नास्ति तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ||१३||
gururādir anādis ca guruḥ parama daivatam
guroḥ parataraṃ nāsti tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ (13)
gurur - Guru; ādir - is the beginning of the universe; anādis - yet, he himself is without any beginning; ca – and; guruḥ - Guru ; parama daivatam - the highest diety; guroḥ - than the Guru; parataraṃ - higher; nāsti - does not exist; tasmai - to that; śrī - glorious; gurave - Guru; namaḥ - my salutations.
The Guru is the beginning of the Universe, yet he himself is without a beginning, the Guru is the highest deity, and there is none higher than the Guru. My reverential salutations at the lotus-feet of such a Gurudev.
त्वमेव माता च पिता त्वमेव | त्वमेव बन्धुश्च सखा त्वमेव
त्वमेव विद्या द्रविणं त्वमेव | त्वमेव सर्वं मम देवदेव ||१४||
tvameva mātā ca pitā tvameva | tvameva bandhuśca sakhā tvameva
tvameva vidyā draviṇaṁ tvameva | tvameva sarvaṁ mama devadeva (14)
tvameva - You alone; mātā - the mother; ca - and; pitā tvameva - you alone are the father; tvameva - You alone; bandhuśca - are the brother, and; sakhā tvameva - you alone are my friend; tvameva vidyā - You alone are the knowledge; draviṇaṁ tvameva - you are the wealth; tvameva sarvaṁ - you are everything for me; mama devadeva - O My ultimate God
O God! You alone are my mother, my father, my brother, and my friend. You alone are the knowledge, my real wealth. You are everything for me. You are verily my God alone.
||इति श्रीगुरुस्तोत्रम् ||
